The pathogen falls in the family of entetrobacteriaceae. Salmonella is rod shaped and gram negative. The genus of salmonella is composed of two species, the S.enterica and S. Bongoeri. There are more that 2000 strains that fall under the category of S. Enterica and are subdivided into six closely related groups on the basis of host range specificity.
Notably, all strains that fall under salmonella are pathogenic to human beings, especially those that fall under the category of S. Enterica. The principle habitat of salmonella is the human body. In line with this fact, the intestinal tract of the human body provides the habitat for the pathogenic microorganism. Additionally, the human blood stream also provides a very habitable environment for the pathogen.

This kind of salmonella is restricted to human hosts. The pathogen resides in the intestinal tract and the human blood stream. This type of salmonella is responsible for causing typhoid and is often referred to as salmonella typhi. Additionally, this type of salmonella causes typhoid in h8uman beings as well as paratyphoid.
This type of salmonella is less restricted to a certain type of a host. Therefore, the non-typhoidal salmonella can be found in both human hosts and also animals. Among the animals, the pathogen can reside in mammals, reptiles, birds and even insects. This pathogen often resides in the gastrointestinal tract of various animals. Studies reveal that the pathogen causes vary wide range of diseases in both the human beings and even the animals (Nurmi 213).
The main types of diseases that result from this pathogen are gastroenteritis. Notably, this type of disease is often transferred from animals to human beings through the consumption certain foods such as fresh meat, fruits, seafood, vegetables, milk, poultry and even eggs (216). The contamination from most animals or pets occurs when an individual comes into contact with the feces of an infected host.

This type of salmonella pathogen is prevalent among animals in the categories of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. Notably, the subcategory of salmonella is not entirely restricted to animals since it also attacks human beings but the occasions are few and far between (220).
